University of Victoria - Language Programs
La Maison Française – July 3 to August 3, 2018
LMF is a five-week, non-credit French immersion program designed for adults at all levels of proficiency, from those who have little to no French to those who have near-native fluency. The program takes place entirely in French and is led by a team of dynamic Francophone language instructors and cultural assistants.
BC teachers who successfully meet all program requirements receive a Certificate of Completion.
Beginning now, we will be offering our first round of BC Teacher Bursaries who contact us the opportunity to register early. All bursaries are granted conditionally pending confirmation of government funding amounts.
Professional Specialization Certificate in Teaching French Immersion – July 4, 2018
This unique French immersion credential is open to both pre-service and in-service BC teachers with strong proficiency in French.
Teachers complete just four courses, all delivered in French, to receive this credential. Our summer intensive cohort begins this July and consists of EDCI 476 – Organization and Instruction in French Immersion, and FRAN 475 – Modern French, offered the first three weeks of July on UVic’s campus.
During the school year, teachers complete two additional courses via distance (EDCI 477 – Designs for Learning in French Immersion in September, then EDCI 475 – Principles in Teaching French Immersion in January), and then receive this credential.
Certified BC Teachers enrolled in the PSC may also apply for a bursary from the BC Ministry of Education to help offset the cost of each of the four courses required in this credential. Typically, these bursaries are valued at $300 or more per course and are awarded at the successful completion of each course.
To be eligible for admission, applicants must:
If you have any questions or would like to receive timely communications regarding the above offerings, be sure to contact Lauren Stamhuis directly (en anglais ou en français) at Languages.Coordinator@uvic.ca or 250-721-8511.
Further improvements to the New Teachers’ Pension Plan
The Teachers’ Pension Plan (TPP) started a new era on January 1, 2018. This New Plan is a modernization of the TPP that increases the lifetime pension and brings equity for all plan members regardless of working as a TTOC, part-time, or full-time teacher. Based on actuarial information from the Teachers’ Pension Plan that indicates a surplus, the Plan Partners (BCTF and provincial government) have decided to implement a series of further improvements. Although the surplus and improvements are pending formal confirmation with pension authorities in late August 2018, Partners have made the decision that the BCTF inform all Plan Members. The information was presented at the March 2018 Annual General Meeting and shared with other representative organizations (British Columbia Retired Teachers’ Association (BCRTA), BC School Superintendents’ Association (BCSSA), BC Principals and Vice-Principals’ Association (BCPVPA), Plan Employer Partner, and the Teachers’ Pension Board of Trustees (TPBT).
